Scarves a Many…

Since this is a knitting blog, I figured this time I would actually include knitting in my post, lol. A few months ago my Blue wanted to learn how to knit. He even went with me to Hobby Lobby and picked out his very own yarn. Of course, he is all boy and decided that he wanted camouflage yarn and we decided that he would make a scarf using just the knit stitch. I was so excited that my baby was going to learn to knit with me! Yeah, that lasted all of five seconds. Not being one that can let things just lay there, I finally picked it up to finish the scarf that he started. The yarn was Red Heart worsted weight yarn. Not near soft enough for my taste, but it is what he wanted. So, to work I went. He was using US #9 needles…I continued, but frogged it after I got it about 3/4 of the way finished. I just didn’t like how wide the scarf was nor how stiff it was turning out. I re-knit it using my US #15’s and the results were so much better! Not only that, but it went by super fast. My Blue absolutely LOVES his new scarf. He hasn’t taken it off for more than a few minutes at a time since I finished it off. Here he is modeling for me with our baby dobey, Kera.

Blue & Scarf

While I was at my weekly cell group with some of the ladies from our church, I was working on Blue’s scarf and one of my cell friends asked me to make her one. She liked the camouflage, so I went shopping the very next day. There was no way I was about to use Red Heart yarn, as I wanted something much softer. I ended up getting Patons Shetland Chunky in the Everglades Varg colorway. I am still using my US# 15 needles and it is coming along quite nicely. I made sure to buy a second skein of yarn, because I wasn’t sure how much it would take to make the scarf as long as I want it, but it would appear that I am only going to need one skein. I have found a great free pattern for the Thorpe Hat by Kirsten Kapur that I am thinking of making to go along with the scarf. Here’s what I’ve gotten done so far….

Traci's Scarf

And that, my friends is what I have been up to. Now it’s time for me to go and do some more knitting. I’ll keep ya’s posted!

What’s in a name????

Ok, so I usually try and keep my posts yarn related in some way, but I simply could not resist posting this one. I have never found a more accurate description of me! WOW!

You are usually the best at everything … you strive for perfection.

You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.

You have the classic “Type A” personality. You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people.

Two More to Show…

Yup, I have been quite a busy little bee.   I don’t have much to say this evening, but I really wanted to get these pics of my latest two FO’s posted for all to see.

I really love making socks, but I can’t wait to work on a pair that has some interesting stitch work in them, as opposed to the constant knit stitch.   It really makes for a long and drawn out project and I am afraid that I wasn’t as diligent about working on Blue’s socks as I was on his Daddy’s and brother’s.  But, I finally finished them.  I am afraid that he won’t be in this pair long….can you believe that he has grown about an inch and a half in the last month!?!?  OMGoodness!  Here’s a pic of the finished product…

I am so totally enjoying my Monthly Dishcloth KAL group that I spoke of before.  The mid-month KAL’s are pattern dishcloths as opposed to picture ones and I really loved doing this one.  It was very interesting and went along very quickly and I love, love, love the end result!  You can’t see the pattern so much in the pic that I took, but in real-time it is absolutely gorgeous and I love the Sugar n’ Cream Twilight Ombre yarn that I used.

Ok, I have more knitting to do, as well as a little crocheting so I am off of here for tonight.  I hope that everyone has an awesome weekend!

I’m learning to Crochet!

Yup, you read right; I am learning to crochet!!! I am on my way to being the Queen of Yarn….Whaaa-Haa-Haa! lol Before I go into that, I want to update you on my previous knitting work. If you will remember (or read back a couple of posts, lol) I was working on some fingerless gloves. I got the first one done and I just wasn’t feelin’ it as it was so…..I totally frogged it. *sighs* However, I did use that yarn to make a beanie for the sweetest girl in the world (yes, I am hoping that this beauty ends up marrying one of my boys when they all grow up….hehehe). This baby girl is quite the little lady. She is a fellow homeschool kiddo and also goes to our church. She has been my youngest ds’s best friend for about 3 years now and our families are quite close. Here is the finished product on, you guessed it, my baby girl!

Ms. Abby

I also joined MonthlyDishcloths, a Yahoo group that does 2 dishcloth KALs each month and it is so fun! Feel free to check it out HERE. Here is the product of my very first KAL (I plan to make 2 more just like it, one in baby blue and another in white and put up for the next baby shower for a bouncing baby boy!)

And now about my crochet adventure! My Granny (Mom’s mom) always crocheted, but she owned a tavern and was a very busy woman and I never got the chance to learn from her. As a knitter, I have come across so many gorgeous patterns that I would have loved to make, but didn’t know how to crochet! Well, not one for being able to tolerate not doing something that I want, I decided I wanted to learn to crochet! I didn’t want to be restricted to just knitting. So far, I have to admit that knitting is my first love and I don’t see loving crochet as much, but I am enjoying my little learning adventure and all of the possibilities that it opens up! The best two sites that I have found to learn this wonderful craft from can be found HERE (lessons) and HERE (wonderfully helpful videos…pics just don’t explain a stitch well enough for me!). The lessons have you make squares using the various stitches that ultimately you can sew together to make a lapghan. Here is what I’ve done so far:

My Beginner Crochet Blocks

I have also joined a few crochet Yahoo groups and I look so forward to the friends and knowledge that I will gain from them. Here are the ones that I have joined and I am truly impressed with the friendliness and helpfulness of each of these:

Thanks to one of the ladies in one of my awesome groups who so kindly shared a wonderful link HERE, here is a pic of the Valentine’s heart pin that I am making for my ladies cell group at church as well as some of the other ladies in the church.  I am planning on adding a bow or a decorative button to the center of it as well…

And now, here is a pic of me and hubby…

And one of my baby doberman, Kera (just one of my 4 dogs, I couldn’t resist getting this pic of her while she was sleepin’..hehehe)…

A Great Loss…

Yes, I am a terrible, terrible blogger!  I know it has been a while, and I am sure that regardless, I will never be a daily blogger ( I have never in my life been that consistent with ANYthing) but at this time, I have suffered the greatest loss of my life to date.  On December 20, 2007 I lost my Mamaw. That is what we called my Daddy’s Mama, Ms. Catherine Shore.  She lived just six weeks short of her 86th birthday.  I am sure that I don’t have to express how terribly sad and distraught that I am to have lost my Mamaw, which is a good thing because quite honestly there are no words to express it.  I am so happy that she no longer has to feel any pain.  That she is finally with my Papaw, my Aunt Bonnie Sue, and my Uncle Herman.  I know that she is in a much happier place…but God!  I miss her!  The distance that we lived apart, approximately 600 miles, never affected how much I loved her, nor how dear to my heart she was.  I can still hear her voice on the phone saying, “Oh baby, I love you too” in that wonderful Hoosier accent of hers; definitely southern by Chicago standards…as beautiful as the voice of an angel by mine.  I have to tell you, that in my heart, mind and eyes, there was nothing greater than my Mamaw.  A woman I never heard a hateful work come out of.  My Daddy may be able to tell a different story, but as my Mamaw, she was perfect.  I loved her so much and love even more still.  A very large piece of my heart goes with her.

I love you Mamaw!

A lengthy catch-up and lots of pics

Boy, it’s that time of year! So much to do, so little time. My very awesome 11 year old was in the church Christmas play. He was one of the main characters of the story of The Christmas Shoes, based on the song. He was the little boy (Nathan) who’s mom was dying on Christmas Eve. Here he is in the play with his “mom”.

Playing Nathan in The Christmas Shoes

During these last couple of weeks, I have also had minor surgery. Not to fear though, I am a.o.k. now. I have also been working my booty off. Being in retail at this time of year is a real killer! I have however, managed to get some knitting in (of course!) I mean, that IS what’s it’s all about isn’t it? lol.

The last time I sat down and attempted to write (just before my dear hubby pulled me away from the pc kicking and screaming), I was going to tell you how much I loved the ribbing that I used in the tissue cozy and that as a result of that love, I decided to make a beanie using that same yarn, that same ribbing. Here are a couple pics of my darling son, with and without said beanie…

How Handsome!

Lovin' the beanie I made him...

Once that was done, of course I moved on to more knitting. This time I was thinking along the lines of some quick knits that I could whip up for Christmas presents. So…I got started on a “Cables & Lace Dishcloth” (or three, and I still want to knit more!)found on p 61 in the September 2007 issue of Creative Knitting magazine. I have to tell you that this pattern is such a fun knit! I am looking very forward to knitting the sweater using the same cables and lace pattern in that very same issue. Here’s the dishcloths that I’ve knit up so far….

This one was knit using Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in White:

All done!

And this one was made using Cabin Fever Cotton Tweed DK in Gold:

What do ya think?? I have something new on the needles now. I am making a pair of fingerless gloves for this sweet little girl I that I work with. I have been teaching her to knit and she picked it up so well! She is going to be thrilled with these! I found the pattern HERE.

Fingerless Gloves

Ok, that’s enough catching up for one post. I’ll leave you with a picture of my 13 year old and my ever faithful, smiley sidekick, “Pelpers” aka Penelope aka Princess Fluffy Butt….

A Fun Night Away & A Little Knitting…

Hubby and I went for a long needed night away without the kiddos last night!  We had so much fun!  We decided to go to Gatlinburg (Tennessee).  We got a room at Midtown Lodge, fully equipped with king size bed, fireplace, and balcony.  After we got settled in, we rode the Sky Lift, went walking through a few shops, and went to the top of the Space Needle.  My hubby says that I can make a friend anywhere and it wasn’t any different at the Space Needle, lol.  The girl working at the ticket booth and I talked and laughed!  What a great experience.  My new friend “Lucky” recommended we go to a bar and grill called Pucker’s and then we went to a club called Hogg’s & Honey’s.  This morning, we got out early to go have breakfast and then it was right back to the room to cuddle for a few hours and then it was time to head back home to our littles.  What a great way to reconnect!

Back home now and knitting on a cute little tissue cozy.  I found the pattern for it HERE.  It’s a real quick knit and I am almost finished.  I’m using Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in Painted Desert.  Here’s what I’ve got so far:

Zakka Tissue Cozy

I did get my oldest son’s socks finished as well!  Here he is modeling them for us:

Well, I’m off to finish my tissue cozy and watch Forest Gump with my family.

My Second Pair and a Nifty Tip…

Well hello there!

It has been quite a week.  I have been taking care of my 2½ year old niece over the last few weeks to help my sister-in-law out, and let me tell ya it’s a very big adjustment when your own “baby” is almost 12.  Taking care of the baby, homeschooling my own two “babies” and working full-time has left me with little knitting time as of late, and I am really starting to have withdrawals!  I have been able to do a little here and a little there though and have even got the first sock of my second pair ever done.  These are for my Jeremy (the 13 yo).  He is so excited and absolutely cannot wait until they are both finished.  He “ordered” a pair of ankle length…..

Jeremy's sock (on)

Jeremy's sock (off)

And now I am working on the second one…

Jeremy's sock #2

Now, check out this pic….

What a nifty idea!

…see the little white thing?  I can’t remember where I got the tip, but it is a little plastic bread “tie” and it makes a great yarn bobbin.  How cool is that???

Ok, now that I actually have a free minute or two, I am off to work on that sock!

Be blessed!
